British gun manufacturing receives a fresh injection of young talent this summer, courtesy of Westley Richards. In response to an expanding order book, two new apprentices and a graduate from Belgium’s Gun Maker School in Leige will join the Birmingham outfit over the coming months. Supported by the Gunmakers Company Charitable Trust, the apprentices – Christopher Bridge (18) and Aaron Bonas (19) - will embark on a five year training scheme in Westley’s own workshops, based in the city’s old gun quarter. Victor Demarteau (25) puts his diploma to good use as an actioner for the company. Managing director Simon Clode comments, “Joining the gun trade is an allegiance in itself – a commitment to training, to craftsmanship and to preserving our manufacturing heritage. New talent is good news industry-wide and the perfect antidote to recession despondency.” The new financial year brings good reports from Westley Richards. 26 gun and rifle orders have been placed since November – up over 45% on last year’s comparable figures – and the gunroom staff now number 18.
