Westley Richards has led the way in firearms development for nearly two centuries, not by the application of new processes and technologies, but by developing a practical understanding of what makes a gun shoot and handle better than its rivals. Technology has, however, a part to play. The company is also a leading manufacturer of press tools, where the demands for high precision are closely aligned to the specialised skills of a Gunmaker.

Westley Richard's modern, computer-controlled milling machines and wire and spark eroders, are used to produce the blank components of a gun's mechanism. However, although these high precision, highly finished parts would satisfy many Gunmakers, Westley Richards regards them as merely a starting point, requiring many hours of hand fitting and finishing before they can become a part in one of their guns.
